In its issue of 26 July 2026, Krone Bunt devoted its large health series to the shoulder. As a shoulder specialist from Vienna, Consultant Dr. Markus Riedl was featured in an interview explaining why complaints arise and how they can be treated.
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body. Its stability comes not from the bones but from the interplay of muscles, tendons, ligaments and the joint capsule – and that is exactly what makes it vulnerable. Repeated overhead movements, long hours at the computer or frequent lifting irritate tendons and muscles.
Warning signs that should not be ignored are pain at night, loss of strength, pain when raising the arm, an increasing restriction of movement as well as painful cracking or locking. Common diagnoses at the practice are rotator cuff disorders, bursitis, impingement syndrome, calcific tendinitis, instability after a dislocation and shoulder osteoarthritis.
Not every shoulder needs surgery: many complaints can be treated successfully with physiotherapy, targeted muscle building, adapted loading and anti-inflammatory measures. Surgery is mainly indicated for larger tendon tears, repeated dislocations, pronounced instability or advanced osteoarthritis – today usually arthroscopically through the smallest of incisions. An early diagnosis is decisive, because it clearly improves the treatment options.
