Thumb basal joint arthritis

Thumb basal joint arthritis is a degenerative joint disease in which the cartilage in the thumb carpometacarpal joint (joint between the metacarpal bone of the thumb and the carpal row) wears away. This leads to pain, swelling and a limited range of motion of the thumb. Treatment begins with targeted occupational therapy exercises to maintain joint mobility in the thumb. Night-time immobilization with a splint is also recommended, as well as painkillers if the pain is severe. Laser therapy, low-level X-ray irradiation in combination with occasional corticosteroid infiltrations can support the therapy. In advanced stages, there are surgical options that can extend to the implantation of an artificial joint. I will be happy to refer you to the appropriate specialist.
