Bursitis

On the outside of the hip joint are bursae, small sacs that are filled with a gel-like fluid and are intended to protect the hip from pressure and friction. If these bursae are subjected to heavy strain, they can become inflamed, which is referred to as bursitis (trochanteric bursitis). This inflammation is very painful and can drastically restrict mobility.

Treatment of bursitis includes conservative measures such as rest, physiotherapy, shock wave therapy, anti-inflammatory medication and corticosteroid injections. Surgical removal of the inflamed bursa is only very rarely necessary.
