ORTHORIEDL

PAIN-FREE TOGETHER

ACL rupture

Alongside the collateral ligaments, the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments are the two stabilizing ligaments of the knee joint. The anterior ligament can tear if the knee joint is suddenly overstretched or twisted. Tearing of the posterior cruciate ligament, on the other hand, is rare. ACL ruptures are usually caused by sports injuries during soccer, skiing or martial arts. However, other 'unfortunate events' such as falls can also cause the anterior cruciate ligament to tear.

Anterior cruciate ligament rupture often leads to pain, swelling and instability in the knee and can affect the normal range of motion. Treatment can be either conservative or surgical, depending on the severity of the injury and the patient's individual circumstances. Conservative methods include rest, physiotherapy and targeted training to strengthen the surrounding muscles. If this conservative therapy cannot alleviate the symptoms, a Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is necessary. This surgery is usually performed arthroscopically, i.e. using state-of-the-art camera technology that requires only small incisions in the skin. During this surgery, the cruciate ligament is reconstructed and accompanying injuries such as meniscus tears can also be repaired in order to restore full stability to the knee. I will be happy to provide you with detailed information about the appropriate surgical method in a detailed consultation in my medical practice.
