Impingement syndrome

Impingement is when tendons and bursae in the shoulder joint become trapped between the humerus and the acromion. The cause can be an anatomical constriction due to an excessively weak shoulder girdle or a bone spur that has developed. This can lead to pain, inflammation and restricted movement and often requires physiotherapy to improve shoulder posture. In addition, occasional anti-inflammatory corticosteroid injections, autologous conditioned plasma therapy (ACP/PRP) or oral anti-inflammatory medication can help. In some cases, however, the joint must be widened and inflamed soft tissue removed as part of shoulder arthroscopy so that the patient can start physiotherapy without pain.
