J-bone graft technique

The J-bone graft technique is used for shoulder dislocations (dislocation) that occurred some time ago if the humeral head subsequently dislocates repeatedly. The recurrent dislocations occur because the bony joint surface is worn away at the front by the dislocation and is therefore reduced in size. As a result, the joint head slips out of the glenoid more easily. To enlarge the glenoid again and prevent it from dislocating again, a piece of bone is removed from the iliac crest (approx. 2 x 1 cm) and shaped into a J-shaped block. This so-called J-bone graft can now be inserted into a previously prepared slot under the joint surface and wedged into place. No foreign implants such as screws or other foreign materials are required for this surgery. Another advantage is that, unlike other surgical techniques, the original shoulder anatomy is not changed.

The inpatient stay can be one night, or longer in individual cases if necessary. The surgery is followed by a rehabilitation and physiotherapy phase lasting several weeks in order to protect the now stable joint in the best possible and lasting way, including through the surrounding muscles.
