Reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament

During an arthroscopic reconstruction of the cruciate ligament, the damaged cruciate ligament in the knee is removed using a small camera and small instruments and replaced with a new ligament. As a rule, an autologous tendon is used for this, usually the tendon of the semitendinosus muscle or quadriceps tendon. The tendon is removed, folded several times and anchored in the bone of the knee joint by drilling holes.

The post-surgery treatment usually involves physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles, improve the range of motion of the knee joint and restore the full function and load-bearing capacity of the knee. The duration of rehabilitation can vary from person to person.
